Chemotherapy slows or stops the growth and spread of cancer by eliminating cancer cells at certain stages in their lifecycle. The targeted stage may vary depending on the medication used. There are more than 100 anti-cancer drugs currently in use for chemotherapy.

While chemotherapy treatment is an effective option for cancer patients, these medications do not differentiate between cancer cells and healthy cells. Staff handling the medications risk exposure to drugs that could damage their healthy cells and produce immediate or delayed long-term toxic effects, including potential mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic effects.

Exposure is possible for any employee who handles the medications or items that may be contaminated. This includes oncologists, nurses, chemists, pharmacists, transportation staff and cleaning staff. Any employee who needs to handle these medications should use appropriate chemotherapy gloves to reduce their risk and mitigate any possible exposure.

Even with tested chemotherapy gloves, it’s recommended that staff minimize the time they are exposed to anti-cancer drugs and replace their gloves every 15-20 minutes to further avoid unnecessary risk.

Gloves sold in India, Canada, U.S. and other European Countries are subject to rigorous testing before they can be approved for use in handling chemotherapy medications. Approved gloves must meet the requirements for the ASTM D6978-05 Assessment of Resistance of Medical Gloves to Permeation by Chemotherapy Drugs.

Test factors for chemotherapy gloves include:

• Penetration: The ability of contaminants to pass through macroscopic holes or pores in gloves is evaluated using air or water leakage tests.
• Permeation: The passage of chemicals through the material of the gloves at a molecular level is tested using seven mandatory chemo drugs and two additional cytostatic medications.
• Degradation: The tendency to break down or become ineffective when exposed to certain chemicals is tested by observing reactions to chemicals used in chemo medications.

Any gloves that meet the standard requirements for these tests are approved for handling and administering chemotherapy medications.
